We are an accident and medical centre privately owned by Pegasus Health Charitable Ltd. We are the only accident and medical centre in Canterbury that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and have been caring for the people of Christchurch for over 20 years.
We work closely with over 320 GPs in Canterbury who are affiliated with the 24 Hour Surgery to ensure their patients have access to urgent care after hours. All patients are assessed, treated, and then referred back to their regular practitioner for on-going care. We also welcome patients who are visitors to Christchurch and can provide them with the care they require whilst they are here.
Our doctors are a mix of Pegasus Health member GPs and our permanent Medical Officers who are specially trained to provide general practice and accident related medical care. Our doctors are supported by highly skilled nurses and administrative staff.
We are an ACC accredited accident and medical service provider, with a fracture clinic and radiology services onsite.
We work closely with the DHB and other healthcare organisation to deliver health services to the people of Canterbury.
The 24 Hour Surgery is a purpose built practice which was setup in 1987 initially to support mainstream general practice in providing a co-ordinated after hours service run by a large collective of Christchurch GPs.
Over the last 25 years the practice has grown and changed structure, but the focus remains the same; to support general practice and all that it encompasses. There are now over 320 GPs in Christchurch who belong to the 24 Hour Surgery and nominate us as their preferred choice for care of their patients when they are unavailable.
The surgery has developed into providing an integrated approach to primary care and moved into exciting community care projects involving general practice and a community nursing group, along with our facility. The ownership has changed from a collective GP owner to an umbrella organisation, that of Pegasus Health Charitable Ltd, which in turn is under the PHO environment.
Our Relationship with Pegasus Health
The 24 Hour Surgery is owned by Pegasus Health Charitable Ltd.
Pegasus Health is a registered, not-for-profit charitable company supporting general practice teams in 94 neighbourhoods.
Each Pegasus Health member practice is an independent business that chooses to be part of the Pegasus family and shares the vision of improving the health of the community we serve. Pegasus Health provides a number of activity streams, such as education and patient services support. As at December 2011, the Pegasus Health membership accounted for 320 GPs, 368 Practice Nurses and 380,000 enrolled patients.
Our Relationship with GP Member Practices
We work with the 320 GPs who belong to Pegasus Health to provide around-the-clock care for the people of Christchurch. These GPs nominate the 24 Hour Surgery as their preferred after hours care provider for their patients. A large proportion of these GPs work shifts at the 24 Hour Surgery, along with our own doctors, to ensure that we are able to provide a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week service.
When patients visit the 24 Hour Surgery, we provide the necessary care for them and then refer them back to their usual GP for any follow up care required. Unless requested by the patient, all patient notes, including x-rays, are sent to their GP to ensure the best in follow-up care is provided.
Patients visiting Christchurch, or for those who are not enrolled with a usual GP, can also access our services and we can also assist patients with finding a regular GP if they wish.
